Shoulder Surgery Fellowship

Fife Shoulder Surgery invites applications from orthopaedic trainees seeking advanced, focused experience in shoulder surgery. This six-month Shoulder surgery fellowship offers broad clinical exposure across shoulder trauma, arthroplasty and arthroscopic procedures, within a busy and supportive specialist service based in Fife, with excellent access from Edinburgh.

As a dedicated Shoulder and elbow consultant in Edinburgh and Fife, I supervise the fellowship and aim to provide a valuable balance of operative, outpatient, academic and teaching experience. The programme is designed for trainees who wish to strengthen their shoulder specialist training before progressing to their next senior clinical role.

About the Shoulder Surgery Fellowship

The Shoulder surgery fellowship is based at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, and Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. It provides extensive hands-on experience in both elective and trauma settings, helping fellows develop confidence in assessing, planning and managing a broad range of shoulder conditions.

I completed my own specialist training through the Reading Shoulder Unit fellowship, alongside the Scottish Travelling Fellowship and British Elbow and Shoulder Society North American Travelling Fellowship. These experiences shaped my commitment to high-quality shoulder specialist training and continuing education.

What the Fellowship Offers

During the Shoulder surgery fellowship, the successful candidate will gain experience across the full patient pathway, from initial assessment and imaging review to operative management, follow-up and rehabilitation planning. The role includes opportunities to contribute to clinical research and teaching.

Fellows can expect experience in:

  • Shoulder trauma and fracture management
  • Shoulder arthroplasty, including complex replacement surgery
  • Arthroscopic shoulder surgery
  • Elective shoulder surgery
  • Trauma theatre and fracture clinics
  • New-patient and review clinics
  • Pre-assessment clinics
  • Clinical research and audit
  • Teaching medical students
  • Teaching orthopaedic registrars

This is an opportunity to develop broad, practical specialist experience within Fife Shoulder Surgery, rather than focusing solely on theatre-based learning.
