About Mr Sunil Sharma

I provide specialist assessment and treatment for patients from Edinburgh, Fife and the surrounding areas. As a shoulder surgeon in Edinburgh, I focus on clear diagnosis, thoughtful treatment planning and continuity of care from your first consultation through to recovery.

I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2007 and have developed extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow conditions. My practice includes non-operative care where appropriate, as well as arthroscopic surgery, shoulder replacement, fracture fixation and specialist elbow procedures.

Qualifications and
Professional Memberships

I completed my orthopaedic training in Glasgow and the West of Scotland before undertaking further sub-specialty training in shoulder surgery. I gained specialist experience during a one-year fellowship at the internationally recognised Reading Shoulder Unit, working under Mr Stephen Copeland and Mr Ofer Levy.

My qualifications include FRCS (Tr & Orth), FRCS (Glasg), FRCS (Edin), DNB and Diploma (Ortho). I am a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).

As an experienced shoulder and elbow consultant in Edinburgh, I was awarded both the Scottish Travelling Fellowship and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society North American Travelling Fellowship in 2006–2007. These opportunities allowed me to visit leading shoulder units in Boston, New York and Annecy, France.

Teaching, Research
and Clinical Interests

I am actively involved in teaching and research and regularly contribute to the development of shoulder surgery education. I am a faculty member on shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder arthroplasty courses, supporting the training of other clinicians in modern surgical techniques.

My principal research interests include rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, shoulder instability and outcomes following shoulder resurfacing arthroplasty. This ongoing interest in research informs my approach as a shoulder specialist in Edinburgh, helping me discuss treatment options with patients in a balanced, evidence-based way.

I believe patients should understand their diagnosis, the available options and what recovery may involve. I aim to provide straightforward information and personalised recommendations based on your symptoms, examination findings, lifestyle and treatment goals.

What Patients Say

Choosing a shoulder or elbow specialist is an important decision. Feedback from past patients can offer helpful insight into the care, communication and support they received throughout their treatment journey.

I aim to provide clear advice, personalised treatment recommendations and continuity of care from consultation through to recovery. Read comments from patients who have shared their experience of treatment for shoulder and elbow conditions.
